From the simple facts of brewing beer and baking bread has emerged a field now known as Biotechnology. Nanoscale techniques are now beginning to play significant roles in many area of biotechnology.

This raises the question of what exactly defines biotechnology. To this there is no real answer. Biotechnology in Europe

Only in March a market analysis by British researchers at the University of Cambridge had calculated a market potential of three billion euros for Europe. At present, such Crowd Investing platforms only have a market share of 6.5%, however, the growth forecasts are good.The biotech industry in Europe spends nearly $7.32 billion in R&D and $23.2 billion in revenue. Around 20% of the total marketed medicines, and as much as 50% of all drugs that are in the pipeline, are all healthcare biotech products. The European biotech industry provides employment to approximately 95,000 people. Biotechnology sector makes a substantial contribution to the fundamental EU policy objectives, such as job creation, economic growth, ageing society, public health, environmental protection and sustainable development.

Biotechnology in Germany

Germany is one of the leading global biotech players and accommodates maximum number of biotech-based companies when compared to the other EU members. The German biotech industry comprises four important segments including agricultural biotech, industrial biotech, medical biotech and service and suppliers.When the German biotech scene comes together at the Industrial Biotechnology Days 2015, one topic always creates ripples: the financing situation. This year, the news was good all around: never before had the industry generated as much revenue as in 2014.Germany has a highly innovative R&D, with a research landscape comprising 330 research institutes and 343 universities that work in cooperation with the biotech companies to help them in discovering newer and more effective products.

It was a record year. For the first time ever, the industry cracked the sales mark of €3bn in turnover generated. Compared to last year, this was an increase of 5.8%. With a total of almost 17,930, there were more employees than ever before working in the biotech industry (2013: 16950). And for the first time since 2008, spending on research and development (R&D) increased rather than decreased and is now at €954m (+ 6.2%). Investments mirrored the growth trend: around €445m was invested in German biotech companies compared to €401m the year before. Private firms raised a total of €172m in 18 rounds of financing, which marks an increase of 26% compared to 2015.
